The burden and poison of expectation

Very often I am made to think as to WHY I’m such a supporter of the non competitive spirit; why I value the sense of bliss at having done something over the high of potentially ‘winning’ something; why, in the hustle and bustle of Innovision, I am one of the few fans of a random event like ‘Star Gazing’; why I prefer an ‘art exhibition’ to a full fledged ‘art competition’ at Moksha… Why is it that the things I LOVE the most, I so desperately seek to keep free of the rat race of one-upmanship.

The following is what a little bit of introspection has brought out.

The first reason that came out, thus more basic and apparent, was that MAYBE I’m too afraid of being rudely informed that I and my ‘art’ are not ‘good enough’. To a limited extent, this seemed true, but the fact that I generally do not feel too inclined to aim to ‘be the best’ in such matters of the self, and that I tend to wallow in a sense of promiscuous contentment at random (Don’t worry, not ALWAYS, iim-x!), made me think further and deeper.

And as is the case every so often, I stumbled upon a goldmine/minefield.

Every ‘non competitive’ activity I indulge in, is centred on what is closest to my self. Every single product manufactured by the processes under the above head, is a celebration of the freedom of the spirit, and an expression of what is most influencing my consciousness at that point in time. In effect, every such endeavour is, for that brief period, THE closest confidante one could possibly have, irrespective of one’s ‘status’; it knows our deepest secrets, even the ones we haven’t consciously embedded into it; it stares back into my blank face once complete, forcing me to go ever deeper into the domain of my knowledge of my self.

To even THINK, of going and marketing something I thus made, or putting it up for subjective evaluation makes me shudder. As in, ok, the feedback might help me ‘improve’ on the technicalities, but what use is such value addition when the soul stands compromised on.

When I am with something we create, I have no expectation from it, save the invisibles mentioned previously. That live piece of cosmic eternity on the other hand, feels nothing of my petty existence, and lets me be free as well. It is this pristine relationship, unburdened by the bother of expectation, which I realized I was seeking so desperately to preserve. The child like (‘retarded’, say the cynics) joys of doing something simply because it makes you happy, once lost to the ways of the world, I’m sure is hard to retrieve.

I know expectations form the basis of most meaningful relationships, but I’m sure it is universally accepted, that “Great Expectations” lead to sorrow and despair, more often than not. And owing to the enhanced sensitivity and depth of this domain of self expression and consciousness, I feel it is even more sensitive, to the burden and poison of expectation.

All of this is of course in accordance with the system variables that I’ve been programmed with. Results vary for every single one of us, on the degree and extent of such a sentiment. Will democracy conspire to have us pseudo-incompetents converted/relegated/hormone-transplanted/ genetically-‘enhanced’/eliminated? Only time will tell.

Sigh… So much love...

"Do din pehle, meri shaadi hote hote reh gayi!"

Its scary the level of "abstraction" i went into while interpreting this scene!

READ ONLY AFTER HAVING SEEN THE PIC (FULL RESOLUTION) CAREFULLY, and feel free to refer back to it whenever you're left achambhit...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

i saw this from the main road, at an angle where the moon was visible in a thin column of sky between the 2 buildings of my society...
to me, at that instant, the moon was the "maathe ki bindiya" that so characterizes so much that is beautiful in the indian woman...
the 2 buildings on either side were her two big eyes, closed or looking downward, right after her ghunghat had been lifted... and the length of the sky outlined her nose...
to me, i'd found my bride... in the moon and 2 buildings...
i'm not sure how that'll translate in more tangible terms... :)

anyhoo... that moment deserved this quantum of random vella thass, at least as far as i'm concerned...

I wonder how an iim prof wud react if this were to surface during an interview! :D

cheers mateys!

PS: yes i know, as of now i hav officially "lost it"! sigh...

"Hello! Just wanted to update you of my existence! Cheers! Cya!"

Its not rare (in fact TOO often) when thats pretty much ALL one wants to say to someone one bumps into after ages.
Instead, what transpires is a "teeth gnashing-ly" awkward silence, marked with an all too trite exchange of meaningless smiles...

More on this later!

The dearth of fursat these days! it ceased to be funny AEONS back!

Sign of our weakness, yet symbol of our love.

A hymn I chanced upon a few days back...:

"ABBA FATHER, let us be yours and yours alone.
Set our hearts, our spirits free.
Make us, Lord, your own.

Through your goodness, Lord we bring
Bread of our labour and wine to cheer the heart
Which will soon be filled for us
With the life of your Son.

Take this drop of water, too,
Sign of our weakness, yet symbol of our love.
By its mingling may we share
Your divinity.

Please, accept our sacrifice
Offered to honor the glory of your name.
Sinners all, we bring to You
Humble, contrite hearts."
------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure WHAT it is in the line that forms the heading of this post, but it has touched me at many levels all at once.
I'll elaborate on whatever comes out of this current fascination... on love, on sorrow, on dependence, on the sweetness of all the previously mentioned, on the paradoxical simultaneity of both, the divine as well as the "only a human mind could invent something as insipid as love" nature of it all!
This post shall stand updated whenever my coordinates of 'inspiration' and 'vellapana' coincide next!

cheers pple!

The Sun in the Moon!

23/12/2007, 3:16am.
As the chilly wind blew outside, and I started to make my way back from my beloved "study" (read computer shack-let!) to my room, the gleaming white light on the balcony floor caught my eye. Having romanticised the superlatively glowing moon only a few hours back, I leaned over the rails and stared into the sky, my eyes and my eye teeming with expectation.

And behold, the sight on display on the gargantuan screen was NOTHING short of awe inspiring. For a moment or two, I just stood still, trying to catch my mind's breath. What lay before me was the stuff dreams are made of. All at once, it was inspiring, terrifying and downright awakening!
To think, that the muse that had sung many a sweet melodies to my self, could also take the form of this symbol of undeniable power (albeit borrowed), sent a million chills down my spine.

In the wonderful chaos that ensued, I managed to clickety click away an obscene number of pics, the pick of which (decent resolution) are available HERE. In spite of the inevitability of the inherent inadequacy of any form of documentation of SUCH a phenomenon, I hope SOMETHING manages to capture a fraction of the magic of nature in glory bordering on belligerence!
Sigh...

Another aspect of the experience which moved me...
The moon was firing on all cylinders, basking in its moment in the sun, (QUITE literally), and watching over as it touched a million souls all at once. IT, was living; albeit on scraps borrowed from the sun. In effect, the moon was singing a hymn of praise to the sun, through its deeds; through its act of shining like there was no tomorrow, and transforming a dark matrix of clouds into a canvas on which to paint its song.
This point led me to myself, and the people around me, and humanity in general.
WE, are little more than the dust off His feet. Taking the analogy from above, the most honest way to acknowledge and gratefully accept His infinite grace, would be to LIVE like the moon was living at that hour.
In other words, every action we do is an expression of where we come from; right from social circles, to family, to whatever we believe to be the One. Through every single thought and deed, it is not us, but the force BEHIND us that shines through.
And convinced as I am of our oneness in and with the One, I have grown to believe that one owes it to "the force behind", IF not to one's own self, to strive to achieve one's best always.

So while happiness, for us and 'our' people, remains THE goal to achieve in life, I hereby hypothesize, that a happiness without one's offering of the self to one's work, to one's dharma (if you will), to Him CANNOT be happiness at all.
The term "work" after a level 'should', I again hypothesize, become synonymous with meditation. I feel, one's bhaav to all things around one will grow in the normal course of events, till one can't help BUT shine on as a living testament for His glory.

I shall like to imagine THAT, to be THE state to be striven to be attained. Call it by whatever name you want to, but in essence I believe all of them are one in this sense.

Sigh...

Oh great moon that follows us always,
Ever unassuming of your own presence.
You, are the vehicle for the sun's glory,
For it is honourable to shine by oneself,
But blessed to spread the light to others.

This positive semblance of cosmic logic,
That You have opened our eyes to,
May it serve to guide both the best and the rest,
For the rest are but a moment behind the best,
Be with us when we need You the most.

To think of the day that has just passed,
My heart sings to You in joy,
Your eternal love all around me,
What else could I ask of Thee?
I love You and You love me,
What more do I need to be?

Kandisa...

Cheers to South Park!

Q. - While people will always act within the bounds of human nature -- good people being good and bad people being bad, it takes religion to make good people bad.

A. - "Well, many religions also give people good reasons NOT to do bad things. And while people may do terrible things in the name of religion or via religion, they may have well still done them without the religion there -- it's just a justification provided for a choice already made."
